Martin J. Heade is best known for his salt-marsh sunset scenes and his hummingbird and orchid South American jungle scenes and for his floral still lifes. "Single Magnolia on Red Velvet," is a fine example of one of the floral still life series. An oil on canvas, it measures 15 by 24 ¼ inches. It has an estimate of $700,000 to $900,000. It sold for $959,500 at Christie's.
