OIL PAINTING : Two Orchids in a Mountain Landscape, c.1870 |
|
Martin Johnson Heade was one of America's most exotic artists, traveling to South America where he became enthralled with the flora and fauna and the wonder of humming birds. While he also painted some sublime landscapes and many fine still lifes, the orchid and humming bird pictures are fantastic and Lot 118 is a prime example. This 17 by 23 inch oil painting on canvas - Two Orchids in a Mountain Landscape, painted circa 1870-2, depicts some cattleya orchids and male and female gorgeted woodstar hummingbirds that are native to Columbia. The cover illustration for the catalogue, it is conservatively estimated at $400,000 to $600,000. It sold for $937,500 at the Christie's.
