Inness's major contributions to California Tonalist painting are found in the modesty of his subject matter and a subdued color palette that synthesizes visual truth and poetic mood. Inness goes to nature as a poet goes, selecting and combining in order to make his impression the stronger. If he finds lines or colors in the landscape which interfere, Inness subordinates them, and exaggerates everything that tends to the unity of the whole.
