Christian Georg Schutz Biography
Christian Georg Schutz II specialized in landscape painting, travelling extensively in the Rhineland to look for subjects. In 1789 Schutz visited Switzerland; in 1799 the Harz Mountains, Saxony and Holstein. He worked in oils and also in watercolours, which Goethe praised. Some of the latter were engraved, for example a set of views of the Rhine from Mainz to Cologne, which was published in Germany in 1819 and by Ackermann in England the following year. Schütz produced views of Frankfurt and made a gouache of The bombardment of Mainz in 1793, one of the first engagements of the French Revolutionary Wars.
