Heinrich Reinhold Biography

Heinrich Reinhold - painter, draughtsman, engraver - was one of the most talented of the landscape painters living in Rome. Supported by his brother, he first studied at the German Academy in Dresden, after that in Vienna. In 1819 he went to Rome and was closely identified with the Nazarenes. Reinhold's landscape style, achieved through his remarkable use of realism and his refreshing use of color, differs sharply from the more idealized painting style of his mentor Joseph Anton Koch. Especially Reinhold's sketches and oil studies, which were done on an extended trip through Italy, are remarkable for their originality and were praised by Karl Friedrich von Schinkel as "truly embodying the genuineness of art in their own right".
