Philips Koninck Biography
Dutch painter, born 1619 in Amsterdam, the son of a goldsmith. He was apprenticed to his elder brother Jacob in Rotterdam. In 1641 he returned to Amsterdam, where he lived for the rest of his life. He knew Rembrandt, and was influenced by his art. The poet Joost van den Vondel also belonged to the circle of his friends. In addition to his work as a painter, he also ran a ferry service between Amsterdam and Rotterdam. He died in Amsterdam in 1688.
