Johann Liss Biography

German painter, born c.1597 in the region of Oldenburg, north of Lubeck. His father was probably a painter in the service of the Dukes of Holstein. His mother was also a painter. After his initial training in the workshop of his parents, Liss set out on a series of journeys. Between 1614 and 1619 he was in Haarlem, Amsterdam and Antwerp, subsequently travelling via Paris to Venice. From 1622 he was in Rome, and at the end of the 1660s he returned to Venice, where he died on the plague 1629/30.
