Gustave Boulanger Biography

Boulanger specialized mainly in Classical and Oriental scenes. While in his twenties Boulanger joined a group of young French painters called the "neo-grecs" who were passionately interested in archaeologically correct reconstructions of Antiquity. He won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1849 and travelled to Italy to paint and study, paying particular attention to the ruins of Pompei.
