English woman painter of portraits and mythological scenes

Annie Swynnerton Biography

The Rome-based Annie Swynnerton was one of the most daring female painters of the nude often shocking audiences with her robustly painted figures. Despite receiving some training at the Manchester School of Art and the Academie Julian, Swynnerton was largely self-taught which may explain the originality of her technique and vision. Although she upheld convention in representing mythological subjects and was often described as a follower of Burne-Jones and Watts, her treatment of the nude was more vivid and naturalistic, enlivened by a bold expressive manner.
