Gwen John Biography

Gwen John was a Welsh female artist and during her lifetime her career was eclipsed by her flamboyant brother Augustus's fame, although he himself always considered her the better artist. In the decades following her death appreciation of Gwen's gifts grew as her work became visible in public collections, until her own reputation in turn outshone Augustus's. The calm, contemplative quality of her pictures, and their rich interiority, were finally fully recognized. After training at the Slade, Gwen John attended Whistler's Academie Carmen in Paris from 1898 to 1899. In 1903 she settled in France permanently, where she lived for the rest of her life.
