Philip Hermogenes Calderon Biography

The painter was was born in Poitiers in 1833, his mother French and his father Spanish. As a Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools Philip Calderon was an advocate of life-study, and during the 1880s he exhibited a series of mythological female figures artworks which were criticized for being too "modern" and "French" in conception (he had trained in Paris under Picot).
