Johann M Culverhouse Biography

American Realist painter Johann M Culverhouse was born 1821 in Rotterdam, Netherlands and died 1895 in New York City. Culverhouse is known as the "painter of nocturnal light or the candlelight painter" and specialized in nocturnal city scenes illuminated by moonlight or candlelight in the tradition of seventeenth-century Dutch painting. He also painted genre subjects, including crowded Dutch taverns, busy markets, and romantic evening streets.
