Although Veronese was censored for this decorative element which some viewed as sacrilegious, it enabled him to portray the splendor of life in the rich and triumphant city state of Venice.
Born in Leeds, Grimshaw first began painting while working as a clerk for the Great Northern Railway. He made his name as a painter of urban streets and dockyards shown at sunset, by moonlight or in the rain. His very particular vision of Victorian Britain proved so popular that his style and subject matter changed little during his career.
