OIL PAINTING: Blossom in the Garden, 1872
Pissaro's subjects look plain . People appear more frequently, pursuing their ordinary activities or, more remarkably, doing nothing at all. Villages appear more often than suburban retreats. Pissaro wanted a firmer reality, but not a fantastic one. As the perpetual outsider, perhaps Pissaro mistrusted a growing middle class in its retreats as much as old wealth.
