This portrait shows Rembrandt in the midst of his career, posing as self-confident in an elaborate 16th-century costume. It seems that Rembrandt is deliberately referring to his famous predecessors in this portrait and thereby placing himself in the tradition of the great "Old Masters". The word "conterfeycel" (more correctly conterfeytsel) is an archaic Dutch term for portraiture.
