OIL PAINTING: Girls at the Piano, 1892
In late 1891 or early 1892, the French government invited Pierre-Auguste Renoir to execute a painting for the Musee du Luxembourg, a new museum in Paris devoted to the work of living artists. renoirchose as his subject two girls at the piano. Renoir lavished extraordinary care on this project, developing and refining the composition in a series of five canvases. This painting reproduces one of the five originals, now in the Museum's Lehman collection.
