OIL PAINTING: Leda and the Swan, c.1598-1600
Rubens did drawings during his first trip abroad to Italy between 1600 and 1608. He copied Michelangelo's famous paintings on the Sistine Chapel ceiling and also sculptures. Rubens returned to Antwerp with many such drawings. They were used as 'reference material' for this painting for instance - ''Leda and the Swan,'' and his workshops assistants and pupils to study and copy.
