OIL PAINTING: Sleeping Nude with Arms Open( Red Nude ), 1917
In his paintings, Modigliani, this devilish artist adopted a sensible and disciplined style: the two hundred or so works from the period between 1914 and 1919 focus on a single theme, the
human being (his life works include only four landscapes). Nudes, portraits of his wife, his friends and people
unknown that he had simply met in passing ... The subjects seem disembodied, just as in this "Sleeping (Red) Nude", their expressions are melancholic, anxious and vulnerable; the lines are supple and elegant, sometimes strongly marked: prolonged necks, excessively long arms, almond-shaped eyes.
