OIL PAINTING: Portrait of Jeanne Hebuterne, 1917
The portrait shows the student of fine art Jeanne Hebuterne, which Modigliani had met in April 1917 and who will be the mother of the little girl born in Nice in 1918. This is one of the first painting he devoted to his wife. Modigliani produced at least 25 portraits of his companion; those carried out in the south of the France are striking with an increased color saturation.
Modigliani died young, only 35, of tuberculosis. His life, entirely devoted to painting, ended in misery and disease. And as if to underline its tragic character, Jeanne Hebuterne threw herself after his death from the fifth floor of his parents' house; the little girl born of her marriage with the painter was going to be orphaned.
