OIL PAINTING: La Discussion politique [Political Discussion], 1889
Emile Friant is an artist who spent little time promoting his paintings in the United States and perhaps this explains why we had not heard of him until recently. Friant paintings generally depict everyday scenes from the lives of poor french folks, much like Bouguereau
, though mostly with a looser style - La Discussion politique [Political Discussion], La Toussaint [All Saints' Day], 1888, La Lutte [Wrestling]. Some of these remind us a little of Edmund Tarbell, John Singer Sargent, and Frank Benson.
