OIL PAINTING: Glasgow Docks
Grimshaw painted with the aid of photographs. As his fame and popularity grew, along with his children, so he encouraged them into a family production team.
The two children who assisted him toward the end of his life were his sons Arthur and Louis. Grimshaw paintings from this period are signed Atkinson Grimshaw in several different hands. The signature on the painting Glasgow Docks is consistent with other paintings sold by Atkinson Grimshaw. This 'family team' can be compared with that of the family of John Frederick Herring, where the father had made a name and the children assisted the family budget by producing paintings in the father's style, which were then often signed by him.
