Toward the end of the decade Dali painted a number of paintings, which while showing an increased technical sophistication also suggest a decline in hallucinatory force. The French poet and founder of the Surrealist movement Andre Breton said of works, such as "Apparition of Face and Fruit Dish on Beach" 1938 and "The Endless Enigma" that:
By wanting to be punctilious in his paranoiac method, it can be observed that Dali is beginning to fall prey to a diversion of the order of a crossword puzzle.
