      PASTEL became Degas's preferred medium. Degas used sharper colors and gave greater attention to surface patterning, depicting milliners, laundresses, and groups of dancers against backgrounds now only sketchily indicated. For the poses, Degas depended more and more on memory or earlier drawings.
