The sitters in this painting by Gainsborough - Mr and Mrs William Hallett are William Hallett (1764 - 1842) and his wife Elizabeth, nee Stephen (1763/64 - 1833); they married on 30 July 1785. The picture, with its light feathery brushstrokes typical of Gainsborough's late style, must date from about that time. The present title is probably of comparatively recent origin.
