Although Carpaccio achieved considerable fame as a portrait painter, this painting is probably the best portrait he painted. It could almost symbolize the end of the age of chivalry. Heraldic devices and other details have led to the extremely plausible theory that the knight depicted is in fact Francesco Maria Della Rovere, the future duke of Urbino.
