In this painting - the first and the largest of Rouln's portraits - van Gogh seems to refer to Dutch portraiture of the seventeenth century, and in particular to the Flemish painter Frans Hals, from which he shared the technique of painting in tonal variation of a single color.
The postman Joseph Roulin is depicted in numerous shades of blue, raw cyan here and there with yellow dots.
