"I didn't have the money to pay models, otherwise I would have devoted myself entirely to painting figures", wrote Van Gogh in 1886. Is this the reason why, like his fellow country -man Rembrandt, he so often took himself as the model, depicting himself with hard, bony features, his gaze always inquisitorial?
