Painted in the Saint-Remy period (May 1889-90). Troubled by the continuous crisis of the disease, it is for van Gogh one
of the richest paintings. In this one he painted the twisted olive trees and the rolling hills, which thanks to their exasperated stylization show one of those moments of depression and self-destructive instincts from which van Gogh was often tormented.
