OIL PAINTING: Cupid and Psyche, 1891
The legend of Cupid and Psyche traditionally allowed for the representation of male and female couplings as well as the expression of human desire and emotion. Swynnerton depicts Cupid kissing Psyche who struggles to resist the temptation to open her eyes as dawn breaks behind distant mountains. The pose of Psyche resembles Swynnerton's Mater Iriumphalis (also 1891), which similarly presents a full-length nude female figure in a rapt somnambulant state. The naturalness of Swynnerton's conception of adolescent lovers-their pale Anglo-Saxon characterisation setting off their blushes-startled critics. Claude Phillips was disturbed by the "quivering reality" of the flesh painting, and described the figures as two "vigorous and over-British young models" (Art Journal, 1891, p.189), while F.G. Stephens criticised Psyche for appearing "vulgar"and "coarse ... She has a mean air, her flesh is without the sweetness, evenness and purity of youth, and her feet are big, ill-formed, and swollen".
