OIL PAINTING: A Summer's Evening, 1888
Steer's large nude set-piece caused a furore when it was shown at the 1888 spring exhibition of the New English Art Club. Critics were accustomed to pouring scorn on nude subjects they had found there in previous shows, such as Roussel's Reading Girl and Harrison's In Arcadia. But Steer's painting was considerably more avant-garde in its style and technique than anything that had been seen at the NEAC before. The dashes of broken color form a continuously vibrating visual surface, a technique Steer derived from Monet. The lady critic who wrote under the nom de plume "Penelope" had an almost physical revulsion to the picture:
the utter unnaturalness and audacity of Mr. Steer's Summer Evening made me feel quite uncomfortable. Three nude girls with spotty colored skins, who have been bathing in a deep blue sea, stand on a beach made of red, blue and yellow spots: the girls are in no respect even passable in appearance, the drawing imperfect, and the whole composition looked to me like a piece of aggressive affectation.
