The carefree Mediterranean life amid simple but charming local inhabitants Tuke described was something which attracted many artists and tourists from northern Europe. The willingness of young boys to pose naked for payment, and the tacit social tolerance or encouragement of such exchanges, added to the attraction of places such as Naples, Sicily and Sardinia. The photographs of Pliischow and von Gloeden are a record of these interests, and it is interesting that Tuke's Nude Italian Boy is posed in an attitude which might easily be found in such photographs, raising the possibility that he may have been aware of them.
