In inventing "Divisionism", in other words, in painting with tiny, evenly juxtaposed dots of pure colour, Seurat was trying, in his way, to provide a solution for the disappearing forms with which Impressionism had ended up. In "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" painted in a divided-up style, the lines of the skilfully arranged composition express sentiments - the horizontal lines evoke immobility, the ascending oblique lines and contrasting silhouettes dynamism,.. Seurat died before seeing his painting hung at the "Salon des Independants": he was thirty-two, and it was Signac who would take up the torch of this new pictorial technique, dubbed Neo-Impressionism.
