OIL PAINTING: Portrait of a Musician, 1485
The painting - the only male portrait performed on a wood panel
attributable to Leonardo, dates back to the first years of the his stay in Milan. While the hair and face, set on warm chromatic tones, are finished with meticulous technique and show an extraordinary pictorial quality, the dress, the stole and hand with a note are painted only at a stage of advanced sketch.
The removal, in the early years, of a repainting at the bottom of the panel, brought to rediscovery the other right hand with a note with musical notes and some letters. Attempts to identify the character addressed towards musicians of the Milanese court, in particular Francmno Gaffurio and Josquin des Prez, without however any certainty.
