OIL PAINTING: The Baptism of Christ, Leonardo and Verocchio, 1472
The panel was initially painted by Verrocchio for the church of San Salvi in Florence. In the face of the angel on the left, and the surrounding indefinite and tenuous "Sfumato", we could recognize the intervention of his student Leonardo.
Attributed to Leonardo is the left portion of the landscape. In the background, a furrowed valley and a river that reflects light from above. The criticism has come to such conclusion thanks to the stylistic examination and to radiographic analyzes. They have ascertained Leonardo added oil on top of first layers in tempera, on the angel's face, on the head of Christ and, in fact, on some parts of the landscape background.
