OIL PAINTING: Dance, 1912
Two extremely rich Russians, merchants, called "Merchant Princes" Morosov and Shchoukin bought Matisse paintings individually. Shchukin was literally crazy about Fauvism and Cubism, and was shopping for it by tens. He commissioned, in 1909, two large decorations: The Dance and La Musique, paid 25,000 gold francs. Very kind and understanding, Shchukin was not angry when bought four Matisse works at the Salon d'Automne, a Blue paining, and instead received the same canvas, but completely repainted by Matisse in red.
