OIL PAINTING: Rouen Cathedral, Sunlight Effect , 1893
Enamored of painting outdoors, Monet made a practice of painting the same scene at different times of day and season, showing the effects of light and atmosphere on the subject. Monet particularly loved painting flowers and his paintings of water lilies are among his most famous works. Monet remarked on the importance of nature to his paintings:"I am following Nature without being able to grasp her... I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers."
