OIL PAINTING: Rouen Cathedral, the Portal and the tour d' Albane, Morning Effect , 1893
For two years Monet dug to reproduce the majestic facade of Rouen Cathedral. It was such a difficult task that sometimes he found himself on the brink of ruin. He
wrote to his companion, ...I am shattered..., I've had a night full of nightmares : the cathedral was falling
on top of me, it seemed either blue or pink or yellow... A harmony of white, brown, and blue - a series of 30 versions were executed, 20 of which would be exhibited in 1895 at the gallery of the important dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel.
